TR-069

TR-069 (short for Technical Report 069) is a DSL Forum (now Broadband Forum) technical specification entitled CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP). It defines an application layer protocol for remote management of end-user devices.

Broadband access devices (modems, routers, gateways, etc.) are becoming more and more complex – too complicated to configure for end-users. TR-069 is an industry standard for the remote management of these devices. With TR-069 the service provider has an auto-configuration server (ACS) to which the CPE equipment (gateway) connects and downloads the configuration or configuration update automatically.

Apart from greatly reducing the complexity for the end-user remote management offers the service provider increased control over the network, hence reducing the level of support required. Also, this mechanism allows the service provider to offer managed services at the touch of a button. Similarly, it is very easy to upgrade/change a user’s service setting further reducing support loads.

Overall, the Horizon gateway has been designed with extreme ease of use in mind at every step, which is highly valuable for small businesses without dedicated IT resources.

For example, after the user has connected the gateway the initial setup only requires a username and password, mimicking the wireless Internet connection at hotspots. All other service settings for the user are downloaded and configured automatically using TR-069.
